Tonight’s Interview: Tony Blengino
Seattle Mariners’ Special Assistant of Baseball Operations Tony Blengino has been in town this homestand evaluating the 2011 LumberKings in first-person for the first time this season. Last night, he witnessed an up-and-down performance from right-hander Taijuan Walker (career-high 5 ER, 5 walks, 8 strikeouts) and the bullpen in a 9-2 loss to the Beloit Snappers, but still had plenty of praise for the 18-year-old Walker and his Clinton teammates.
Blengino, who shared his time with me last year to talk about prospects like Nick Franklin, Erasmo Ramirez and Vinnie Catricala, turns his sights to the 2011 edition of the Kings including the likes of Walker, tonight’s starter James Paxton, Mickey Wiswall, Tim Morris, Kalian Sams and others on this special pregame interview. We also talk about the talent coming up through the Mariners system, Tony’s involvement in and thoughts on the 2011 Draft, some on-the-cusp former LumberKings like Blake Beavan and Kyle Seager and more.
It’s a nearly 12-minute interview that will air in two parts on the pregame show and is definitely a worthy listen. Listen Here: Blengino Interview (Full Version) 6.28.11

K-Pax makes his first post-Futures Game nomination start tonight for your LumberKings, looking to avenge a May 30 loss to the Snappers. Since that outing (4 R, 2 ER over 5.0 IP, 4 BB, 7 K), Paxton has combined to go 2-1 with a 3.24 ERA. Last time out against Quad Cities, he fanned a career-high 13 batters over 6.1 innings in a 5-1 win.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM, listen to the broadcast online at 1390kcln.com.
