Sunday Notes (8/7)

The Kings dropped the opener of the four-game set in Burlington last night, 8-4 to the Bees.  Left-hander Tony Butler gave up four runs in the first to make a 1-0 lead short-lived, and the Bees added two more runs over the next two innings including a solo home run from Nino Leyja to take a 6-2 lead.  Julio Morban went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored to keep Clinton close, but Tyreace House added a two-run single off right-hander Ben Versnik in the bottom of the eighth to put the Bees back up by four.  Burlington right-hander Jonathan Joseph gave up three runs over 5.0 innings in the winning effort.

Beloit and Cedar Rapids both lost last night, so the LumberKings are still 3.0 games up on the Snappers, 4.0 games up on the Kernels for the second-half West Wild Card spot.  Kane County gained another game for the top playoff spot, meaning the Kings enter the day 4.0 games behind the Cougars.  T-minus 29 games remaining.

Today’s Game Notes:  8.7.11 kingsnotes

Right-hander Stephen Kohlscheen returns to the club to make his second start, 17th appearance.  Kohlscheen is 1-3 with a 6.39 ERA in the Midwest League, but was successful in nine game, seven starts at Everett, going 2-0 with a 3.03 ERA.  His only win with Clinton is ironically in his only start, a 5.0-inning scoreless effort against Beloit on May 2.  We’ll see how the Auburn product fares in his return to the rotation today.  Burlington counters with right-hander Nate Long, who is 6-5, 3.27 on the season including 3-0, 2.31 in four outings against the Kings.

First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM, listen online at 1390kcln.com.
