Saturday Notes (8/13)
It’s back to the road for your LumberKings tonight as they open a three-game series against the Peoria Chiefs at O’Brien Field. Hitting the road might not be so bad after the Kings dropped two of three to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on a brief three-game homestand including an especially tough 2-1 loss last night. It took the Clinton offense seven innings to get their first run on the board (by way of a Carlos Ramirez sacrifice fly), and the Kernels went right back ahead shortly after on a double by Rolando Gomez scoring Travis Witherspoon. The Kings had a chance in the bottom of the ninth as pinch-runner Tim Morris took off from first base on a two-out 3-2 pitch that Matt Browning served into the right-center gap, but the Kernels held on for the win as Witherspoon fired in to first-baseman Ricky Alvarez, who then caught Morris at the plate. The loss came despite 7.0 innings of one-run baseball from defending MWL Pitcher of the Week Stephen Kohlscheen. Right-hander Matt Bischoff took the loss, his first since April 12.

Left-hander Anthony Fernandez, 3-1 with a 2.09 ERA and eight quality start in his last 10 outings, takes the hill for game one against the Chiefs. It’s hard to believe, but in 17 outings this season, Fernandez has not once faced Peoria this year. He’ll rely on experience against Chicago Cubs’ affiliate Boise (2-0, 2.84 in 2 starts with Everett last year) in his first match-up against the Chiefs tonight. They’ll counter with lefty Frank Del Valle, a Havana, Cuba native that is 2-2 with a 4.02 ERA in seven outings. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM, listen online at 1390kcln.com.
One other minor piece of news to pass your way…right-hander Carter Capps, Seattle’s third-round pick in 2011 and the newest LumberKing as of yesterday will make his pro debut in the starting role on Monday in Peoria. He’s on the roster as right-hander Taijuan Walker (who turns 19 today) heads to the Temporary Inactive List. He’s likely done for 2011 after going 6-5, 2.89 over 18 starts, 96.2 innings in his first full season.

Tonight’s Interview: Carlos Ramirez
For the first time this season (and the first time I can honestly recall), the LumberKings won a game after trailing in their final at-bat. The team’s 11th last at-bat victory and fifth walk-off winner came in the bottom of the 11th courtesy of Carlos Ramirez, whose bases-loaded two-out single scored Robbie Anston and Matt Browning for a thrilling 2-1 win over the Peoria Chiefs yesterday (listen: Ramirez Walk-Off 2-Run Single in 11th 7.31.11).
The clutch hit, producing just the second and the third runs of the series for the LumberKings, is not the first for Carlos. Last season, the newly-promoted Ramirez stood at the plate with the Kings down 7-6 to the Lake County Captains in the 12th inning of Game 2 of the Midwest League Championship Series. His single to right-center scored Tim Morris to tie the game, and although Mario Martinez was then thrown out at the plate trying to score the winner, the LumberKings would end up the victors in the bottom of the 18th on a memorable fielding error by Captains’ third-baseman Adam Abraham. The 8-7 Clinton win is the longest championship series in league history.
Today, I interview Ramirez for the first time ever. He admits that he had that MWLCS hit on his mind when he came up to the plate yesterday. We talk about the game-winning hit, last year’s game-tying hit, his role as a utilityman and switch-hitter and more.

Roster Moves: We saw the return of infielder Jake Schlander to the club yesterday as Jetsy Extrano was moved to short-A Everett, today, the LumberKings have re-added first-baseman Tim Morris from high-A High Desert. Left-hander Nate Reed, who was scheduled to start tonight, has been promoted to High Desert. Left-hander Roenis Elias, 1-0 with an 0.82 ERA with Pulaski, has joined the club and will fill Reed’s starting spot next Saturday in Burlington.
As for tonight, right-hander Jessie Nava (1-3, 3.13) makes his first start with Clinton in a spot role. He’ll face off against Chiefs’ right-hander Starling Peralta (1-3, 7.48) in the rubber match. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM, listen to the game on 1390kcln.com.

Tonight’s Interview: Matt Browning
Right-hander Taijuan Walker’s nine-inning complete game effort might have stolen the show last night, but the LumberKings also put together their third six-run inning (tying a season-high for most runs in one frame) in the last week, scoring six times in the third inning to beat Great Lakes, 6-2. Mike McGee doubled home a run, Mickey Wiswall added an RBI double (listen: Wiswall RBI double 7.13.11) and Stefen Romero launched a two-run homer (listen: Romero 2-R HR (#9) 7.13.11), but it was Matt Browning’s clutch two-run single to center (listen: Browning 2-R single 7.13.11) that actually produced the tying and game-winning runs.
And so, it’s time to chat with Browning for the first time. Seattle’s 43rd round pick out of James Madison University enjoyed success in Pulaski last season (.330, 4 HR, 24 RBI in 34 games) and is making an impact both defensively and offensively as Clinton’s third baseman in 2011. Browning is 3-for-8 with three RBI over his last two games, just over 10 days removed from being struck in the helmet by a pitch from Quad Cities’ right-hander Trevor Rosenthal. He talks about last night’s performance, coming back quickly from the injury, his time at James Madison University, his hot start in Pulaski last season and more.

Left-hander Tony Butler, a career 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA in two starts against the Loons (both with Wisconsin in 2007), makes his third start for the LumberKings in game two tonight…he’s 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA over the first two outings. First pitch is at 7:00 PM, listen online at 1390kcln.com.

2011 First Half Highlight Reel

James Paxton's All-Star-worthy performance (3-3, 2.70 ERA, 73 K in 50.0 IP) was one of the bright spots for Clinton in the first half.
Sometimes, first halves go by in the blink of an eye. Sometimes, they drag on. The 2011 first half falls somewhere in the in-between for me. I’ve seen some impressive things so far out of these LumberKings (a red-hot week by Kalian Sams, the dominant outings of James Paxton and Taijuan Walker, the resurgence of Mickey Wiswall in June, the impressive range at short for Anthony Phillips, the emergence of Keli’i Zablan and Jonathan Arias out of the pen, etc.), yet also a lot of struggles as evidenced by a current 23-46 record.
But, as hitting coach Terry Pollreisz reminded me on our way into Elfstrom Stadium today, anything can happen in the second half. Polls cited his 2002 San Antonio club that finished 25-45 and 17 games out of first place in the Texas League West Division in the first half. That club (including for just six games a 21-year-old Eddie Menchaca) rebounded to win the division with a 43-27 second-half record and went on to win the Texas League title in seven games over Tulsa. Something to keep in mind as we head to the second half of 2011 on Friday.
While looking forward here on the half’s last day, it’s also time to look back at some of the high points of the season so far (unfortunately last night’s game-winning homer by Matt Browning just missed the cut). With that, I present the third-annual “First Half Highlight Reel”.

Happy Father’s Day as well to you regular readers. After today’s 1 PM game at Kane County, I’ll be heading home to Oak Creek, Wisconsin to spend my All-Star Break with family. I won’t be covering James Paxton’s All-Star appearance in the Quad Cities on Tuesday, but you can follow along at with the MiLB Gameday Feature on MiLB.com.
I’ll be back on Friday to start with a clean slate. Can’t wait.
