Tonight’s Interview: Rich Dorman (Vol. 4)
The LumberKings won the series and kept a 4.0-game Wild Card lead on Beloit in-tact with a 5-2 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits last night. Kalian Sams went 2-for-4 with a double (listen: Sams RBI double 8.19.11) and a solo home run (listen: Sams Solo HR (#15) 8.19.11), but it was Anthony Phillips’ two-out infield single scoring Mickey Wiswall in the fourth inning that stood as the winning run (listen: Phillips RBI infield single 8.19.11). Left-hander Anthony Fernandez had a short 5.0-inning outing by his usual standards, but struck out a career-high 10 batters in that time and allowed just two runs to the Bandits (listen: Fernandez Career-High 10th K, 8.19.11). Relievers Jessie Nava, Ryan Kiel and Jonathan Arias combined on 4.0 scoreless innings in relief of Fernandez, with Arias picking up his eighth save.
With another great outing by Fernandez, more lock-down relief from Kiel and Arias and a host of new arms to talk about, it’s time to catch up with LumberKings’ pitching coach Rich Dorman for tonight’s interview. He gives plenty of insight on Fernandez, right-hander Stephen Kohlscheen, Mariners’ third-round right-hander Carter Capps, tonight’s starter Roenis Elias, Arias and his dominant second half and more.

Tonight’s Interview: Rich Dorman (Vol. 3)
The LumberKings are 2-0 in the “show-and-go” after last night’s 5-3 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park. Clinton took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out double by Tim Morris (listen: Morris 2-R double 7.1.11) and raised the lead back to two in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Carlton Tanabe. Left-hander Anthony Fernandez dealt over 7.0 innings, limiting the Bandits to a run on four hits and turning in a highlight-reel-worthy 1-6-3 double play on a line drive back to the mound in the sixth inning (listen: Fernandez 1-6-3 DP 7.1.11). The 3-1 lead wouldn’t last in the eighth as right-hander Keli’i Zablan loaded the bases and yielded a run on a wild pitch, but right-hander Tyler Burgoon gave up just one run in a bases-loaded no-out situation, keeping the game tied at 3-3. In the ninth, the Kings went right back ahead as Kevin Rivers was hit by a pitch and scored on a Mickey Wiswall single to center (listen: Wiswall Go-Ahead RBI single 7.1.11). Stefen Romero executed a safety squeeze bunt scoring Matt Browning in the ninth as well, and Burgoon worked a perfect bottom of the ninth to improve to 5-3.
With the outstanding outing from Fernandez, a seven-game losing streak snapped by George Mieses, the double-A promotion of James Paxton, the addition of left-hander Tony Butler and the three-win run by Burgoon, it’s high time to catch up with pitching coach Rich Dorman again. Dor talks about those pitchers plus tonight’s starter Taijuan Walker on tonight’s pregame interview.

Friday Notes (7/1)
It’s a “show-and-go” day here in the Quad Cities for your LumberKings, so please excuse the lateness and briefness of this post. The Kings earned their first win in the QC this season by scoring at least a run in six-straight innings and pitching well in relief last night, defeating the River Bandits 8-5. Stefen Romero’s 2-for-3, three-RBI performance included a much-debated two-run homer down the left-field line in the third inning (from the press box angle it appeared to be foul, but home plate umpire Garrett Patterson indicated it had hooked fair) that gave the Kings a lead they would not relinquish. Seven runs backed 5.0 decent innings from right-hander George Mieses (4 runs, 3 earned on 8 hits), who won for the first time since April 30 at Wisconsin. Right-hander Tyler Blandford yielded a run over 2.0 innings, lefty Nate Reed turned in a scoreless eighth and righty Jonathan Arias worked out of a bases-loaded jam for his second save in the ninth.
Highlights: Romero Debated 2-R HR (#5) 6.30.11 | Arias Strikes Out Klein for 2nd Save 6.30.11
Obviously, the huge news today is the promotion of James Paxton to double-A Jackson. I’ll likely be talking with pitching coach Rich Dorman on this subject and others in an upcoming interview segment, but as for tonight, no new interview for you.

Ground ball artist Anthony Fernandez (2-2, 4.22) starts against Rock Falls native Seth Blair (4-3, 4.65) in the middle game of this series tonight, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM at Modern Woodmen Park. Listen to the broadcast online at 1390kcln.com.

Tonight’s Interview: Rich Dorman (Vol. 2)
Yes, the LumberKings went 0-3 on the homestand against the West’s first-place team, the Burlington Bees (including a 4-2 loss last night), but there’s no doubt the Clinton pitching staff is coming around. As you’ll read in tonight’s Game Notes (posted below), the rotation is 3-4 with a 2.67 ERA over the last 11 games and the bullpen is 1-2 with a 1.64 ERA over the last four games.
Right-hander Forrest Snow fell to 1-4 despite allowing four runs (one earned) over 6.0 innings last night. Right-hander Brandon Maurer has an ERA of 0.69 over his last two starts. Left-hander James Paxton made strides in his second start two games ago. Right-hander Jandy Sena (no runs in two games, 4.0 IP) and left-hander Edlando Seco (no runs in two games, 6.0 IP) are helping the bullpen turn it around. There’s signs of life amongst the Clinton arms.
Thus, it’s time to talk to pitching coach Rich Dorman again. In the full-cut interview (a shorter version will air on the broadcast), Dorman talks about Snow, Maurer, George Mieses, Paxton, tonight’s starter Taijuan Walker, Sena, Seco and others. Definitelya worthy listen as Dorman elaborates with great detail over nearly nine minutes.

Tonight’s Interview: Rich Dorman
As I said on air after the 13th inning last night, it wasn’t pretty, they’ll get no style points for it, but the LumberKings
finally secured their second win of the season and snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory in Beloit. A one-out triple by Ramon Morla and RBI fielder’s choice by Tim Morris plated the only run Clinton would need, and Julio Morban (bases-loaded HBP) and Kevin Rivers (RBI groundout) added two insurance runs. Meanwhile, on the mound, right-hander George Mieses (7.0 IP, 2 H, 3 K), left-hander Jason Markovitz (2.0 IP, 3 H) and right-handers Matt Bischoff (2.0 IP, 1 H, 4 K) and Tyler Burgoon (win, 2.0 IP, 2 K) combined on a six-hit shutout.
Following Clinton’s first shutout win, I figured it was prime time to talk with the new pitching coach of the LumberKings, Rich Dorman. We discuss last night’s gritty effort from his staff, his observations of Mieses through two starts, Forrest Snow’s six-inning no-no three games prior, tonight’s first start from right-hander Fray Martinez and more.

We’re getting a decent amount of rain currently in Clinton, but should that subside, here’s tonight’s lineups:

LumberKings (2-6): Carlos Ramirez/2B, Julio Morban/CF, Kevin Rivers/RF, Mickey Wiswall/DH, Stefen Romero/LF, Steven Baron/C, Ramon Morla/3B, Tim Morris/1B, Anthony Phillips/SS, Fray Martinez/RHP

2011 Coaching Staff is Announced
We’ve just learned who will be guiding the LumberKings as they attempt to defend their West
Division Title in 2011. Eddie Menchaca, manager of the playoff-qualifying Pulaski Mariners in 2010, will become the 44th manager in Clinton baseball history. The 29-year-old former infielder (yes, he won’t turn 30 until February) will be joined by former Everett pitching coach Rich Dorman, returning hitting coach Terry Pollreisz and trainer Jake Naas.
Read up on Menchaca and Dorman right now over at LumberKings.com. I’ll have more information on Naas’s background later in the winter. No Performance Specialist has yet been named to replace Jim Bose (assuming he doesn’t come back).
Wondering where all your favorite former LumberKings coaches from ’09-’10 are? Well, they’re all still with Seattle. Manager John Tamargo is taking over as the Latin America Field Coordinator, which means we’ll still see JT yell “little man hit it” and “pick ‘em up” a few times when he passes through AEF this year. Dwight Bernard has ascended back to his old post as the pitching coach for triple-A Tacoma, where he was for four seasons prior to coming to Clinton. He’ll have a nice, renovated Cheney Stadium to come back to. Trainer B.J. Downie will be with short-A Pulaski next year.
Elsewhere, Scott Steinmann is back as a manager for the first time since helming the 2009 LumberKings. He’ll try and lead Everett to a second-straight Northwest League title after serving as the AquaSox’ hitting coach last year. Jesus Azuaje (’09) is back as the manager of the AZL Mariners in Peoria, and Lance Painter (’09) will once again be the double-A pitching coach for Jackson. Eddie Tamez, the 2009 Midwest League Trainer of the Year, returns to high-A High Desert for his second season with the Mavs (which on another note were formally purchased by Main Street Baseball LLC today, the same group that owns the Quad Cities River Bandits).
